How to Talk with God: Luke 11:1-13

January 3, 2009

Luke’s account emphasizes Christ’s foundational teaching to His disciples in order that they may overcome darkness while living and declaring the Gospel. The text proper describes Jesus’ teaching in response to a question on “how to talk with God.”

One ought to approach God with adoration as one’s personal source, sustainer, and protector in the adopted community. Although He is near, His holiness, righteousness, and otherness of character are to be humbly meditated upon. Intercession that God’s rule might be extended through us and His community of faith should be made.

Andy queried on Luke 11:13

Andy queried on Luke 11:13 "How is it that the Father gives the Holy Spirit if we already have Him?" There are at least three possible answers and they involve:

1 - Idea of requesting the Spirit's regeneration: Titus 3:5
2 - Idea of second baptism and filling by the Spirit evidenced by prayer in tongues and faith healing, : Acts 8:16
3 - Idea of Spirit's illumination of prayer: Ephesians 1:17-23

Where does Jerome land on the question: #3 most likely, #1 possibly, and #2 remotely plausible although my narrative's space doesn't have much affinity for pentecostal - Wesleyan - Azuza Street - second baptism. Google the terms and you can 'catch my wave' on that one...that is, what I mean.
