Raising Sunken Treasure - Luke 12:22-34
February 28, 2009
Today’s account follows Jesus’ teaching that “real life is not measured by how much we own” (Luke 12:15). It differs from Jesus’ previous teaching by addressing the faith of a disciple rather than the mere interest of a crowd. Two exhortations are directed to the faithful: (1) to attach with utter confidence in the heavenly Father’s wise provision and (2) to hope with utter readiness for Christ’s return. Both exhortations are in keeping with Luke’s purpose to steady the wobbly faith of ‘God lovers’ as they invest their life in the eternal ends for which they were created as God’s sacred vessels before His altar (cf. Luke 1:3-4).

Wondering about a verb tense
Wondering about a verb tense this morning. Does the Greek say "it is the Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom" (future or present tense)? Or is it in the past tense, "your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom"? This makes a big difference, I think. some translations make it past, others present or maybe future.

Answer via jerome: Ahhh a most perceptive and important question. It is neither future nor present and that is the frustration and need for trust and hope. It is an aoristic tense used both as an indicative and infinitive emphasizing the kind and in this case certainty of action and diminishing any emphasis on the ‘time’ when the action will occur. The action emphasized is that the "Father is pleased to give you the kingdom."
