Further Facings - Luke 15:11-32
A series of eight parables describes salvation from different vantage points. The parable of the prodigal son serves to further illustrate Jesus’ teaching on God’s mercy and grace extended to the penitent lost sinner. He does this to emphasize the startling contrast of sinners drawn to Jesus because of holiness lived out in mercy with the Pharisees whose righteousness was lived out in pride and contempt toward others. These parables come as Jesus journeys toward His atoning work of salvation in Jerusalem. They provide God- lovers with an understanding of just how forgiving and caring God is and they certainly fulfill Luke’s purpose of this Gospel, to steady their wobbly faith.
