Reception Lines - Luke 16:1-13

May 23, 2009

We now consider the very strange sixth parable in a series of eight. Salvation still remains a theme and is spoken to those seeking to live a calculated life in Christ. It is also spoken in the hearing of the tax gatherers and the Pharisees. Jesus seems to use this parable to correct any misunderstanding of equating forgiveness with the wanton disregard of stewardship described in the previous parable of the prodigal son. This parable also seems connected to the one which follows by emphasizing eternal consequences of the use of our transitory goods in the here and now. As with the other parables in this series, this one provides God-lovers with an understanding of just what God expects of his servants and certainly fulfills Luke’s purpose of this Gospel, to steady their wobbly faith regarding the use of God-given means.
