Apparently Christ - Hebrews 7:1-10

June 19, 2010

Our reflection returns to the theme of Jesus’ Messianic priesthood introduced in Hebrews 2:17-18 and addressed again in 5:1-10. Jesus’ priestly work of propitiation, based upon a deep sympathy for our suffering, sets up an explanation of His high priestly office that continues through 10:18. The author speaks to those of who are quick to hear. He seeks to dissuade them from being wooed back to the pomp and circumstance of their former Jewish lifestyle and does this by showing the superiority of Christ’s role as high priest over that of the Aaronic priesthood. Acceptance of the author’s words fulfills the basic purpose of the book, ‘to cast off any weight or entangling sin by fixing our eyes upon Jesus, the initiator and perfecter of our faith’ (cf. Heb. 12:1-3).

In response to further questions of my interpretation that Melchizedek is pre-incarnate Jesus ...

I based my interpretation upon the author of Hebrew’s synthesis and redaction of Philo, 2 Enoch, Nag Hammadi, and cave fragments 11QumranMelchizedek pointing to Melchizedek as Messiah . I included an article for your interest. If this is indeed Jesus then the ‘wine and bread’ symbolism is plausible since Jesus himself used both symbolical throughout the NT.
