Enlightened by Peace - Isaiah 60:17-22

December 3, 2011

The Advent Wreath is a reclamation of God’s creation from pagan ritual by transforming it into a story of living symbols through the truth of Scripture. The circular shape of the wreath symbolizes both completion and victory. This second week of advent we will study how completion and victory are found in the thorns of holly and their red berries, the seedpods or pine cones, and in the evergreen. The candles of hope and peace merge into one light, illuminating these aspects of the wreath and reflecting their virtues to all who are drawn to their glow (cf. Isaiah 60:17-20; Psalm 87).
